Sessions are available in person at Sheidow Park, in Adelaide's southern suburbs or via telehealth anywhere in Australia.
Trauma can follow a single frightening event or build up from ongoing stress, injury or difficult life experiences. It doesn't always look the way people expect. You might recognise some of these:
✓
Flashbacks, intrusive memories or nightmares related to a past event
✓
Feeling constantly on edge, easily startled, or unable to switch off
✓
Avoiding people, places or situations that remind you of what happened
✓
Feeling numb, disconnected, or cut off from people around you
✓
Trouble sleeping, concentrating or managing everyday tasks
✓
Strong reactions to reminders of a workplace injury, accident or other distressing event
If you're having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please contact SCBS on 1300 659 467 or Mental Health Triage (SA) on 131465 or, in an emergency, call 000. This page is general information and isn't a substitute for urgent care.
Trauma is a broad term for the impact of distressing or overwhelming experiences. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is a diagnosable condition that can develop when the effects of trauma persist and interfere with daily life, work and relationships. Complex PTSD can develop after prolonged or repeated trauma and often includes difficulties with emotional regulation, self-worth and relationships alongside the core PTSD symptoms. Trauma can also follow adjustment disorders, acute stress reactions or a workplace injury.
As a mental health occupational therapist, I look at both the psychological impact of trauma and how it's affecting your day to day life, your work, your routines and your relationships. Together we build a pace and approach that feels manageable.
